“You can just drop me here, and I’ll walk the rest of the way, it’s not far away from here,” I said and started unbuckling my seatbelt as Josh hit the breaks. His hand stopped me as it closed over mine to prevent me from completing the unbuckling. My heart skipped a beat from the contact.

 

“Do you think I’m just going to let you go?” My heart skipped another beat but I forced it to calm itself down. As usual my heart read way too much into it, while my head could still understand that he didn’t mean it like I probably wanted him to mean it. “I’m here now, I might as well join you in spying on your dad.”

 

“It’s okay, you don’t have to. I can manage by myself.”

 

“I want to.”

 

“No you don’t,” I insisted. “It’s quite boring and mostly just waiting for my dad to enter, and then come out again.”

 

“I think I can manage. And besides, that gives us plenty of time for me to convince you that Enter Shikari is the best band known in history.”

 

I actually laughed, both sarcastically and because of the enthusiasm he radiated. “You can always try. I think I’ll stick with my opinion about the noise.”

 

“So, where to now?”

 

I looked at him, trying to decipher what his eyes said about the matter, but they seemed clear and free of any secret motive. “Are you sure? This is the last chance to bail.”

 

“I’m sure. It’ll make for a good Saturday afternoon pottering.”

 

I should’ve been offended that he considered spying on my cheating dad as a pottering, but I was quite flattered that he insisted on being here with me, even if it probably wasn’t mean in the way I wanted it to.

 

“Well, first left and then I’ll guide you as we go,” I said with a weak smile that Josh replied to with a brilliant one of his own.
